Putting Fresh Eyes on Video Content for a Global Leader in the Vision Industry

Bringing Alcon’s state-of-the-art vision care into the modern era of YouTube infotainment

Alcon — a world leader in vision care and products — came to us for help with updating some of their older informational video content for use on their YouTube channel. Our goal was to produce a modern look and feel, presenting content that’s practical and informative while avoiding the horror-film vibes sometimes associated with eye surgery — because medical decisions and procedures are scary enough already.

Working from diagrams and reference video footage, we created 3D animations of Alcon’s revolutionary diagnostic machine, emulating real-life lighting and texturing scenarios. We maximized versatility by building the videos from smaller blocks of animation that can be rearranged and repurposed to create shorter versions in both English and French.

Ultimately, we delivered a series of three videos (1, 2, 3) along with several cutdown versions of each to be used across social media. The look and feel we created encourages a sense of peace around a topic that can be unsettling for many. Viewers are left with newfound knowledge that empowers them to take action while assuring them of Alcon’s authority in the field.

Through several rounds of storyboarding, revisions, and styleframes we built a design language that was used throughout the videos — from iconography to text treatment and overall mood.‍

Working from provided brand guidelines, we utilized clean backdrops and strategic color palettes to instill a sense of calm and ease in the viewer. To emphasize the intended mood, we employed deliberately paced, slow and smooth camera movement to invoke feelings of well-being and security.

We created a uniform look and feel that encourages a sense of peace around a topic that can be unsettling for many. The three videos provide viewers with a newfound knowledge that empowers them to take action while assuring them of Alcon’s authority in the field of both diagnostics and treatment of problematic eye conditions.

As part of the project, we also built Alcon's ORA and LensX Systems in 3D. These systems assist in surgery and help surgeons make real-time adjustments during the procedure.
