An Exploration of Augmented Reality use in Wine Packaging

A bottle of wine carries stories and significance that a buyer should understand before purchase. To explore how wine packaging can engage buyers while still on the shelf, we created Treasures and Tannins. This faux-wine brand blends nature and technology through biodesign, crafting wines from around the world that honor each region's unique character while celebrating diversity.

During the discovery and research phase, we chose AR for its engaging and immersive qualities, blending video, audio, and 3D elements into the real world. Our design integrated hints of the wine's origin into the label, which comes to life upon activation, taking users on an immersive journey through the region. The AR experience also highlights the wine's unique traits and offers wine enthusiasts a deeper understanding of the region's history and culture, ultimately improving their wine-tasting experience.

Our exploration of augmented reality culminated in a comprehensive understanding of AR technology, including best practices, associated costs, workflow, and limitations. The final mockup demonstrates the potential of AR integration within the wine industry, specifically in the realm of wine packaging and presentation.
